A groundbreaking collection of monologues by world-renowned authors and playwrights, edited by Eve Ensler and Mollie Doyle and commissioned by V-Day for the first V-Day: UNTIL THE VIOLENCE STOPS festival, which took place June 2006 in New York City.

Beyond the time constraint of five minutes or less and the theme of women and violence, each monologue was for the writer to realize. No constructs, restrictions, or rules. A fantasy of a world where there is no violence. A poem about the physics of a slap. A memory.

These writings are inspired, funny, angry, heartfelt, tragic, and beautiful. Together they create a true and profound portrait of how violence against women affects every one of us. A MEMORY, A MONOLOGUE, A RANT, AND A PRAYER is a call to the world to demand an end to violence against women.

Contributing writers include: Edward Albee; Tariq Ali; Hanan al-Shaykh; Erin Cressida Wilson; Kimberlé Crenshaw; Michael Cunningham; Ariel Dorfman; Edwidge Danticat; Michael Eric Dyson; Eve Ensler; Jane Fonda; Carol Gilligan; Suheir Hammad; Carol Kaplan; Michael Klein; Deborah Copaken Kagan; Nicholas Kristof; Mark Matousek; Susan Miller; Susan Minot; Robin Morgan; Kathy Najimy; Lynn Nottage; Anna Deavere Smith; Alice Walker; Jody Williams; Howard Zinn

Until The Violence Stops features playwright and activist Eve Ensler in a powerful film that documents how The Vagina Monologues grew into an international grassroots movement called V-Day to stop violence against women and girls.  When this documentary was made in 2002, eight hundred cities around the world participated in V-Day by staging benefit performances of The Vagina Monologues.

Director Abby Epstein takes us on a poignant journey into the hearts of women and includes revealing testimonies from men, who expose social and cultural attitudes that perpetuate the pervasive violence against women. In emotionally
charged interviews and performances, everyday women and celebrities like Rosie Perez, Salma Hayek, Tantoo Cardinal, Jane Fonda, and LisaGay Hamilton embrace their bodies, reconcile their past, and bond together to break the silence that
surrounds abuse.

Following our (UTVS) film, there will be a panel discussion facilitated by our 2008 beneficiaries, Women In Transition (WIT) and  the Institute for Safe Families (ISF).  The afternoon will culminate in a presentation on self-defense by WAVE  (Women's Anti-Violence Education), a program of WIT.

The WAVE program builds the power of individuals, families, and communities to respond effectively to sexual and gender-based violence.  It teaches safety, assertiveness, and physical self-defense skills;  provides accurate information about assault, harassment and abuse; and challenges the attitudes and systems that perpetuate violence.  The emphasis is on intuition, voice, street smarts, confident body language and physical resistance. The curriculum is accessible to and inclusive of all women, girls, and other targeted groups, regardless of age, physical ability, income, culture, or identity.

We believe eVery women and  girl can benefit from this presentation and hope you will join us.
